Tabernacle Installed

The next stage of the reinstallation of the flagpole project was been completed this week with the tabernacle being fixed to its base. This is now ready for the flagpole to be attached to it in the coming weeks.

Armchair Donation

The Reading Room has received the donation of an armchair from Keith McLean in memory of his wife Andrea Mayu Houser. The Trustees would like to thank Mr McLean for his generous donation.

Replacement Flagpole and Tabernacle – Update

The reinforced concrete base for the tabernacle has now been poured and is currently curing. Once cured, the bolts which will secure the tabernacle will be drilled and bonded into the base.

Replacement Flagpole and Tabernacle

As you may have noticed, the Reading Room has been missing its flagpole for some time. It had to be removed when the tabernacle (the support for the flagpole which goes into the ground) became dangerously rotten. After detailed investigations into a purchasing a replacement, which included surveys to ensure the flagpole would remain secure in the windiest conditions, work has commenced on installing the replacement. Captain Rayley’s Artefacts

In September, Caroline Wynne Willson, a descendant of Captain Rayley’s first wife, visited the Reading Room with her husband George. During their visit she kindly made a donation of a number of his photographs and letters along with his document case. The Reading Room was built in memory of Captain Rayley in 1864, for more information on Captain Rayley, please see the History page.

Snooker Table Refurbishment

The snooker table has been refurbished and a new cloth fitted. As part of the refurbishment the angles of the pockets were all measured to ensure they met current requirements. The fitter advised that whilst the weight of the cloth is the same as the one which was removed, it will be faster as it is a slightly thinner cloth.
